ABOUT ME

ARTIST STATEMENT
think of where you were on that day
you were a child
you were your mother's child;
you looked into the woods
and saw yourself reflected
in the leaves and in the soil;
It is within the landscape that I see myself, reflected. I seek out the relationship between the natural and the artificial; between the familiar and the strange; between the safe and the unsafe spaces. From personal inquiries into memories of place, I am investigating the ephemeral nature of “home” and how our human experience parallels with natural phenomena of the landscape.
I combine the images of my childhood home with memories of the environments in which I have resided, resulting in landscapes that merge personal observations of surroundings, experiences of relocation, and displacement into a new territory.
I choose to work in various materials, incorporating drawing media, painting, embroidery, and sculptural elements into my pieces. Each offers it's own history, possibilities, and limitations.
ARTIST BIO
I grew up in the small town of Elwood, Indiana and previously studied at John Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, IN. After becoming dissatisfied with academic life, I decided to leave Indiana and see what the world had to offer.
During my time away from academia, I exhibited work in numerous galleries, including Ghost Gallery in Seattle, UpFront Gallery in Fargo, Art House Gallery in Brooklyn. In 2012, I was chosen as as a recipient for the Solo Exhibition Program at Altered Esthetics Gallery in Minneapolis, and this prompted me to return to school to finish my degree.
In 2014, I completed my BFA in Fine Art from the University of Minnesota, where I received a Department of Art scholarship during my senior year and exhibited work at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery. I relocated to my homestate of Indiana for my final semester as part of the National Student Exchange program. While in Indianapolis, I showed work at Gallery 924, the Harrison Center for the Arts, and General Public Collective. In 2015, I was one of six finalists for the Stutz Residency Program.
As of September 2016, I am an MFA candidate at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA.
